Vacuum coffee canisters: everything you need to know

Alles wat je wilt weten over de vacuüm koffiebus

In this blog, you’ll learn what a vacuum coffee canister is, why it’s great for storing your coffee beans, and how to use it at home.

What is a vacuum coffee container?

A vacuum coffee canister is a practical storage solution for coffee beans, consisting of a glass container with a lid that creates a vacuum, either electronically or manually.

The Barista-Essentials vacuum coffee canister features a smart lid that automatically creates a vacuum at the press of a button. The display on the lid instantly shows all the key information you need to keep your coffee beans in optimal condition.

With data on temperature, humidity, and storage time, you can get the most out of your beans and enjoy delicious espresso for as long as possible.

The canister comes in two sizes, suitable for 250g and 500g of coffee beans. It’s best to buy coffee in small quantities, so you can always enjoy beans that are as freshly roasted as possible.

How to use a vacuum coffee canister?

You use a vacuum coffee canister to store your coffee beans and keep them fresh for as long as possible. This way, you preserve the flavor and complexity of your beans.

Your coffee roaster usually packs freshly roasted beans in a bag with a one-way valve. This allows gases from the freshly roasted beans to escape without letting air in.

However, once you open the bag, the beans are exposed to their biggest enemies: oxygen and humidity.

These factors negatively affect the quality of your beans. Once exposed, the quality quickly declines if the beans aren’t stored properly. Old beans are easy to recognize: they produce little crema and result in a thin, flat espresso with little flavor and sometimes a papery aftertaste.

Note: Always buy freshly roasted coffee beans. Check out our range of freshly roasted specialty coffee beans.

Tips & Tricks for Storing Coffee

  • Buy coffee in small quantities so it never gets too old.
  • Only buy freshly roasted beans: always check the roast date on the bag. (Supermarket beans are never freshly roasted.)
  • Keep an eye on the age of your beans and adjust your grinder settings for the best extraction. As beans age, you’ll often need to grind a bit finer. Use a coffee scale to maintain consistent ratios!
  • Keep temperature and humidity as stable as possible by storing your vacuum coffee canister in a cool, dark place. The ideal temperature for storing coffee beans is between 20°C and 25°C.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The glass container can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher or by hand washing, but not the electronic lid!

Clean the lid with a slightly damp barista cloth. Never submerge the lid in water or rinse it under running water.

Only store whole coffee beans in the canister. This tool is not designed for ground coffee, as fine grounds can get into the vacuum pump and cause damage.
