Why use a coffee distributor?

Most DeLonghi machines don’t include a coffee distributor, and that’s a real shame, because this small tool can make a big difference in the taste of your espresso.

Picture this: your beans are ground and you’re ready to dose them into your portafilter. But are the grounds sitting evenly in the basket?

If you tamp immediately after grinding, you often end up with a puck that’s denser in the centre than around the edges. Since water always takes the path of least resistance, your extraction will run unevenly.

A coffee distributor is designed to fix this. Before tamping, place it in your portafilter and give it a few spins.

Thanks to the metal discs on the bottom, your grounds will be perfectly level after just a few twists.

Which machines are compatible with a 51 mm coffee distributor?

We offer coffee distributors in several sizes to help as many home baristas as possible.

The 51 mm distributors are ideal for DeLonghi machines, including:

  • DeLonghi Dedica
  • DeLonghi La Specialista
  • DeLonghi Icona Vintage
  • DeLonghi Stilosa
  • DeLonghi Scultura

Need a different size? Try our 54 mm distributors for Sage machines, or 58 mm for E61 machines.

Coffee distribution use tips

Distributor & Tamper Combination

Have you seen our distributor-tamper combo tool? It combines a palm tamper and coffee distributor in the size you need.

It saves space in your coffee corner and may even improve the taste of your espresso.

The palm tamper helps ensure consistent tamping pressure. That means no more guessing if you tamped the same as last time.

That’s because the discs are depth-adjustable, and you can feel when the edge of the tamper reaches the edge of your portafilter. A great tool if you want to remove all uncertainty from your puck prep.

WDT Tool and Puck Screen for Even Better Distribution

In addition to a coffee distributor, there are other barista tools that help prevent channeling or otherwise uneven extraction.

Take the WDT tool, for example. It breaks up clumps in your ground coffee caused by static during grinding. This helps water flow more evenly through your puck.

Another option is the RDT spray. Lightly mist your whole beans before grinding, and you’ll reduce static, and with it, the number of clumps. That means less stirring with your WDT tool.

Finally, you could try using a puck screen. Place it on top of your puck to ensure the water is evenly distributed during extraction. Bonus: it also helps keep your group head clean. A true win-win.
