Tamper 54mm
54mm Tamper from Barista-Essentials
We offer different types of 54mm tampers that fit perfectly into your Sage portafilter. This way, there’s always one that helps you brew your best coffee at home.
You can choose from:
- Classic tamper 54mm: with a solid stainless-steel base and a handle made of stainless steel, plastic, or rosewood.
- Calibrated tamper: clicks audibly at 12kg of pressure, making it easier to tamp consistently.
- Tamper & distributor: a combination tool with a palm tamper and coffee distributor. Helps you tamp straighter and speeds up your puck prep.
The Sage tamper for your machine
Our 54mm coffee tampers are designed as Sage tampers to complete your setup with a Barista Express, Impress, Bambino, or Pro.
Other espresso machines that work with a 54mm tamper include models from Solis, Breville, and Gastroback. We’ll list the exact machines for you further down.
With a Sage espresso machine, you do get a standard tamper. Still, upgrading this Sage tamper is definitely worth it. Here are 3 reasons why:
- The standard Sage tamper is made of plastic and therefore feels a bit cheap.
- It’s not weighted, which makes tamping harder.
- It doesn’t have an ergonomic (rounded) handle that allows you to apply proper pressure.
Which tamper size for Sage Barista Express / Sage Barista Pro?
For the Sage Barista Pro or Sage Barista Express, you need a 53.3mm tamper. This is because the Sage portafilter and filter basket are 54mm. If you use 54mm tampers or other tools, they won’t fit.
Our Sage tools are designed with a 53.3mm diameter to fit seamlessly into your filter basket. The same applies to our coffee distributor, dosing cup, and puck screen.

Difference between 54mm and 53.3mm tampers
Here’s how it works: A 54mm portafilter (like Sage has) needs a tamper that’s just a bit smaller to fit properly: 53.3mm.
This means our 53.3mm tamper is the ideal fit for your 54mm portafilter from Sage or Solis. They also fit perfectly in our 54mm bottomless portafilter.
Reasons to choose a precision-size tamper
By choosing the right size tamper, you do yourself and the taste of your espresso a big favour.
This is what happens if your tamper is too big or too small:
- Too big (58mm): Won’t fit your filter basket, so you can’t use it at all.
- Too small (51mm): The edges of your puck won’t be tamped. Water will flow through faster here, pulling too many sour flavours into your cup.
Which machines is 53.3mm suitable for?
Before buying a tamper, it’s always smart to double-check which size you need. Some Sage espresso machines have a larger brew group, which requires a 58.5mm tamper.

Tips for better tamping
Tamping is an essential part of your puck prep that leads to a delicious, balanced espresso.
With these tips, you’ll tamp even better:
- Hold your tamper like a doorknob.
- Place your thumb and index finger on the edge of the portafilter while tamping. This way, you can feel if you’re tamping straight or not.
- Use a tamping mat or tamping station to keep your portafilter from slipping.
