A solid foundation: the tamping mat

When you buy an espresso machine, a tamping mat is usually not included. When I (Jasper) got my Sage machine, that meant tamping directly on the countertop.

The result? Scratches on the surface, coffee grounds everywhere, and a portafilter that doesn’t sit steadily while tamping.

During our research, we came across many tamping mats with odd shapes and unnecessary extras, like special cut-outs for the tamper. What we wanted was simple: a good, functional tamping mat.

So we decided to develop one ourselves.
